Midlands Choice is well on its way to readiness for the October 1, 2014 compliance deadline for the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) transition, as are the majority of our providers and payers.  As your organization works toward compliance, please keep the following in mind:

  • ICD-10 will affect diagnosis and inpatient procedure coding for everyone covered by the Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act (HIPAA), not just those who submit Medicare or Medicaid claims.
  • ICD-10 is only supported by Version 5010 of electronic health transactions, which has been required since January 1, 2012.  If your organization still functions on Version 4010, you will need to implement Version 5010 before you will be able to test ICD-10.
  • The October 1, 2014 compliance date is firm.  Claims with dates of service 10/01/2014 or later must be billed appropriately in accordance with ICD-10 in order to be considered for processing.  Not adhering to compliance may result in payment delays or non-payment.
  • It is important to contact vendors that your organization works with such as billing services, clearinghouses, or practice management software vendors to verify their ICD-10 compliance plans.

Additional information about ICD-10 can be found by going to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services website at www.cms.gov/ICD10.
