When performing claim status inquiries for professional claims through Aetna’s secure provider website or when calling Aetna’s Provider Service Center, use the provider’s individual (type 1) NPI number.  If the organizational NPI number is used, Aetna might select a provider record with a different NPI from the one on the claim and no results will be returned.

Aetna also requires the individual (type 1) NPI number for the admitting or primary care provider when requesting precertification and referral services, as well as for precertification and referral inquiries.
